Choose silicone kitchenware by looking at the finished product, its intended food-contact use, its temperature limits, and the documentation behind its claims. “Food grade,” “BPA-free,” “platinum-cured,” and “LFGB” can each provide limited information, but none proves zero migration, zero particle release, or overall product quality.
The bottom line
A useful silicone claim should answer three questions:
- What exact finished product does the claim cover?
- What use conditions were evaluated?
- What regulation, recommendation, or test method supports it?
A traceable maker with realistic instructions and finished-product documentation is more informative than a long list of undefined marketing terms.
Start with the intended use and complete product
Look for a clear statement that the item is intended for food contact and whether it may be used for cooking, baking, serving, refrigeration, freezing, or reheating. “Heat resistant” is incomplete without a maximum temperature and instructions.
An item sold as silicone may contain a rigid core, seam, adhesive, printed decoration, coating, valve, or closure. Ask which parts touch food, drinks, steam, or condensation. A statement about raw silicone does not automatically cover every component or the finished product.
What does “food grade” mean?
“Food grade” is a broad description, not one universal silicone recipe or test. Its value depends on the applicable rules, intended use, and whether the evidence covers the completed food-contact item.
A raw-material certificate may not cover pigments, seams, coatings, later manufacturing steps, or final construction. “Food grade” also does not mean suitable for every temperature, food type, or duration.
Useful documentation identifies the exact product, food-contact components, conditions of use, and applicable regulatory basis.
Is silicone “FDA approved”?
In the United States, 21 CFR §177.2600 covers repeated-use rubber articles and includes silicone basic polymers, permitted ingredients, and extractives conditions.
“FDA compliant” may be appropriate when a company can identify the applicable requirement and intended conditions. “FDA approved” can be misleading when it implies that FDA individually tested and endorsed the finished spatula, bag, or lid.
Ask which regulation applies, whether the statement covers the finished product, and which food types and temperatures were considered. Neither phrase is a product-specific test for particle release or proof that nothing migrates.
What do LFGB and BfR claims mean?
LFGB is part of Germany's legal framework for food and consumer products. It is not one universal grade of silicone. BfR Recommendation XV provides specifications for silicones, including permitted substances and limits related to volatile and extractable components.
A useful claim should connect to a dated declaration or report covering the exact product, construction, and color. It should identify the laboratory or responsible company, test conditions, and applicable requirements.
LFGB or BfR evidence can be useful, but it does not promise zero particles, zero chemical migration, or suitability for every use.
What does “platinum-cured” mean?
Curing is the manufacturing step that forms silicone's rubber-like network. Platinum-cured silicone uses a platinum catalyst in an addition-curing process. Peroxide-cured silicone uses another reaction route.
Platinum curing can avoid certain by-products associated with particular peroxide systems. It does not establish that a finished item contains only silicone polymer, has no residual compounds, or releases nothing.
Peroxide curing is not automatic evidence that a product is unsuitable. The relevant questions are how the item was manufactured and whether the finished product meets requirements for its intended food contact.

What do BPA-free, 100% silicone, and medical grade mean?
BPA is not normally used to build silicone elastomer. A BPA-free claim may still matter for a core, coating, adhesive, or another material, but it is not a complete silicone migration assessment. It also does not automatically mean free from BPS, BPF, or other bisphenols.
“100% silicone” and “100% pure” need definitions. Finished silicone may include pigments, reinforcing materials, processing aids, catalysts, or other formulation components. Ask whether the phrase means no conventional-plastic core, a silicone food-contact surface, or something else.
“Medical grade” does not automatically establish suitability for food contact. Medical-device and food-contact evaluations have different purposes and use conditions.
What about “microplastic-free” or “zero shedding”?
Food-contact compliance, curing language, or a raw-material declaration does not prove either claim.
Credible particle-release evidence would need to identify the finished product, temperatures, treatment cycles, measured size range, chemical-identification method, contamination controls, and detection limits. Without that support, “microplastic-free” and “zero shedding” are too absolute.

Does the pinch or twist test work?
Online videos sometimes tell shoppers to pinch, fold, or twist colored silicone. If the stretched area becomes lighter, they may claim the product contains cheap or unsafe filler.
That conclusion is not supported by a validated home test. Stretching can change thickness and the way light passes through the polymer, pigment, and reinforcing materials. A color change does not identify what is present, how much is present, whether anything migrates, or whether the finished item meets food-contact requirements.
Passing the test does not prove quality, and failing it does not prove danger. Controlled evaluations use composition, extraction, migration, or finished-product test methods.
A practical buying checklist
Look for:
- a named, traceable manufacturer;
- a clear intended food-contact use and temperature limit;
- identification of each food-contact material;
- documentation tied to the finished item and applicable requirement;
- clear cleaning and care instructions; and
- restrained claims without unsupported zero-migration or zero-shedding promises.
Pause when a listing relies on unexplained badges, a generic raw-material certificate, no responsible company, no use limits, or absolute claims with no test method.
