Can You Detox Microplastics? What the Evidence Shows

No sauna, supplement, cleanse, probiotic, or medical procedure has been proven to safely remove a meaningful amount of microplastics from the human body. Some particles appear to leave through stool and urine, but that is not the same as a validated “detox.”

Quick answer

There is no established microplastics detox. Controlled human research has not shown that a consumer treatment lowers a validated measure of microplastics throughout the body, produces a lasting reduction, and improves health because of that reduction.

The body does appear to excrete some microplastic material. Researchers have detected plastic signatures in human stool and urine. But detection is not proof that an intervention cleared material from the brain, arteries, liver, or another tissue.

A 2026 systematic review evaluated 25 studies that measured micro- and nanoplastics in living people. It found material across several biological samples, but it also found major differences in laboratory methods and moderate-to-high risk of confounding or measurement bias. The review did not identify a validated human removal protocol.

Early studies exploring specific probiotics and medical blood filtration are worth following. They do not validate a sauna routine, supplement, cleanse, probiotic product, or blood treatment for the general public.

Three things to know

  • Detection is not removal. Finding particles in urine, stool, sweat, or treatment waste does not show that an intervention cleared material from organs or tissues.
  • The most promising intervention research is preliminary. A probiotic result came from mice using specific strains and controlled polystyrene exposure. The blood-filtration study did not establish a lasting reduction in patient body burden.
  • Exposure reduction has better practical support. Reducing avoidable plastic contact around heat, abrasion, and repeated food or drink use is more defensible than purchasing a “detox.”

How the main claims hold up

Claim 1: Can a sauna make you sweat out microplastics?

PFK verdict: not established in humans.

Sweat studies involving chemicals associated with plastics, such as bisphenol A or phthalate metabolites, do not demonstrate removal of intact plastic particles. We did not locate a controlled human trial showing that sauna use lowers a validated blood or tissue burden, produces a lasting reduction, or improves health by removing microplastics.

A one-person before-and-after test cannot settle the question. Recent exposure, sample collection, contamination, laboratory thresholds, and several lifestyle changes made at once can all affect the result.

Claim 2: Can fiber, water, supplements, or cleanses flush microplastics out?

PFK verdict: sensible habits are not a proven removal protocol.

Fiber supports normal bowel function, and appropriate hydration supports general health. That does not show that either one removes microplastics already present in tissues.

Researchers detected micro- and nanoplastic material in urine from 12 volunteers in a 2024 study and 29 children in an exploratory 2026 study. Neither study tested whether drinking more water, eating more fiber, or following a cleanse increased removal. Material in stool can also include particles that passed through the digestive tract without entering circulation.

The same evidence gap applies to supplements, restrictive cleanses, colonics, and chelation. Do not use an invasive, restrictive, or drug-like treatment for microplastics without an established medical indication. “Natural” does not establish effectiveness or safety.

Claim 3: Can probiotics or kimchi remove microplastics?

PFK verdict: promising mouse research, not a human recommendation.

A study in Frontiers in Microbiology screened 784 bacterial strains and selected two for further testing. In mice exposed to polystyrene, the strains increased particle excretion by 34% and reduced residual polystyrene in the intestine by 67%, according to the paper.

The result involved specific bacterial strains, mice, and a controlled form of polystyrene. It does not show that eating ordinary kimchi or taking a general probiotic removes varied microplastics from people. The paper’s three authors were affiliated with and employed by Bluepha Co., Ltd., which is relevant when evaluating future commercial claims.

Claim 4: Can blood filtration remove microplastics?

PFK verdict: preliminary medical research, not a consumer cleanse.

A 2025 study examined waste fluid from therapeutic apheresis performed on 21 people with postinfectious ME/CFS. Researchers reported microplastic- or nanoplastic-like material in the removed fluid.

The study did not establish how much patients’ blood levels changed, whether material in organs or tissues decreased, whether any reduction lasted, or whether symptoms improved because particles were removed. Apheresis is an invasive medical procedure used for specific clinical purposes. It should not be repackaged as a wellness treatment for microplastic exposure.

What PFK recommends now

The evidence supports reducing avoidable exposure rather than trying to remove particles afterward. Practical places to begin include:

  • Move food to glass or ceramic before microwaving or reheating
  • Use glass or stainless steel for frequently used drinkware and storage
  • Avoid leaving disposable plastic water bottles in prolonged heat
  • Replace deeply worn plastic cutting boards and utensils
  • Prioritize plastic that contacts hot food or drinks every day

These choices reduce specific contact points. They do not promise zero exposure, remove particles already in the body, or prevent disease.

PFK assessment: The science supports reducing avoidable plastic contact. It does not support buying a treatment that claims to “detox” microplastics from your body.

How PFK evaluated these claims

PFK assessed the claims about sauna, fiber and cleanses, probiotics, and blood filtration using the same five tests:

  • Was it demonstrated in people, rather than only in a laboratory or animal study?
  • Were intact microplastics measured with appropriate contamination controls?
  • Did the intervention show actual removal, rather than detection, excretion, or movement between biological samples?
  • Was the reduction repeatable and lasting?
  • Did it improve health enough to outweigh the intervention’s risks?

None of the claims currently meets all five tests. Some provide useful leads for further research, but none supports recommending a consumer microplastics detox.
